Part 108

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively developing Part 108, a regulatory framework aimed at standardizing Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). This initiative is expected to significantly impact the drone industry by enabling more complex and expansive operations without the need for individual waivers.

Current Status

As of January 2025, the FAA has yet to finalize Part 108 regulations. The delay has prompted industry stakeholders and lawmakers to urge the FAA to expedite the rulemaking process, emphasizing the importance of BVLOS capabilities for the growth and integration of drone operations across the globe.

Proposed Framework

During the FAA’s Drone and Advanced Air Mobility Symposium in 2024, insights into the proposed Part 108 framework were shared. The FAA is considering two primary pathways for BVLOS approvals:

  • Operational Permits: A streamlined approach intended for operations with lower aircraft weights, quantities, and operational scope.
  • Operational Certificates: Designed for more extensive operations, such as large-scale drone delivery services.

These pathways aim to create a flexible and scalable approval process, ensuring both small-scale and large-scale operations can benefit from the new regulatory framework. While the final details of Part 108 are still pending, it is expected to introduce a standardized framework for BVLOS operations, enabling more complex and expansive drone missions.

Implications for Drone Operators

The anticipated implementation of Part 108 is set to revolutionize the drone industry by delivering several key benefits:

  • Reduce Reliance on Waivers: Establishing a standardized framework will eliminate the need for case-by-case approvals, streamlining operations for operators.
  • Enhance Operational Capabilities: Clear guidelines will enable operators to conduct more complex missions over greater distances, opening new opportunities for commercial applications.
  • Foster Technological Advancements: Regulatory clarity will encourage investment in BVLOS technologies, driving innovation and progress across the industry.

As these changes unfold, DARTdrones is uniquely positioned to support operators through this transition. With industry-leading training and preparation courses, DARTdrones can help ensure pilots are equipped to meet the new regulatory requirements and take full advantage of the expanded operational capabilities enabled by Part 108.

Conclusion

While the finalization of Part 108 is still pending, the FAA’s ongoing efforts and interim approvals indicate a commitment to integrating BVLOS operations safely. DARTdrones remains dedicated to staying informed about regulatory developments to help drone operators prepare for this pivotal shift. With Part 108 on the horizon, DARTdrones aims to propel the drone industry into a new era of innovation and growth, ensuring operators are ready to seize the opportunities this transformative regulation will bring.

DARTdrones is thrilled to announce the launch of its new course, “Intro to Drones: Opportunities, Careers, and FAA Certification Readiness“, designed to introduce high school students to the exciting world of drones. This innovative program aims to engage young learners by exploring various career opportunities in the drone industry while preparing them for FAA certification.

Why the New Focus on Drone Workforce Development?

For years, DARTdrones was approached by teachers, college professors, and workforce development instructors seeking a course that they could teach to their students. The DARTdrones team knew it would be a tremendous undertaking to make our Part 107 Test Prep course easy for a teacher new to aviation to teach. The DARTdrones Part 107 Test Prep courses have historically always been taught by DARTdrones expert instructors who are manned aviation pilots. After intensive research about the future of the drone industry, the DARTdrones team could see a clear gap in the future need for professional drone pilots. The DARTdrones team decided to jump full force into filling this gap through licensing curriculum to other teachers, connecting employers with alumni, reconsidering industry certifications, and qualifying for and helping build state industry certifications. We believe this Workforce Development initiative is the future for DARTdrones!

Focused on Young Learners

The “Intro to Drones” course offers students a comprehensive foundation in drone technology, blending technical instruction with hands-on activities and collaborative discussions. DARTdrones prioritizes student engagement, ensuring that even the challenging aspects, such as preparing for the FAA Part 107 Certification Exam, are both educational and enjoyable.

What Sets DARTdrones Apart?

Most drone curriculum providers fall into 2 categories:

  • STEM, which focuses on coding and building drones
  • Game playing, which focuses on topics like drone soccer or drone racing

DARTdrones is neither of these. We focus on real world drone operations professional drone pilots are flying for their career. We’ve been training pilots at some of the largest drone programs in the US for over 10 years. Now, we are bringing that same training into the classroom, adapted for younger learners.

DARTdrones is committed to creating a comprehensive training that aligns with our enterprise drone program partnerships. Where we shine, is in our ability to provide pilot training on real-world drone use cases. Since we train the pilots at numerous large oil and gas companies, electric utilities, water authorities, and public safety agencies, we have inside knowledge on how to build out professional curricula to support their operations.

  • Drone Aerial Surveyors- These professionals utilize drones to gather data for topographic surveys, agricultural planning, and environmental monitoring, providing insights that were once costly or impossible to obtain. Drone aerial surveyors need advanced drone training and equipment and additional software training for deliverables to utilize the drone fully. DARTdrones offers this type of advanced training in our mapping and modeling drone course.
  • Drone Cinematographers- In the film and television industry, drone cinematographers offer a new angle on storytelling, capturing breathtaking aerial footage that enchants viewers. DARTdrones offers a foundational drone aerial photography and videographer course
  • Search and Rescue Drone Pilots and Coordinators- They leverage drone technology to locate missing persons and aid in disaster relief operations, where drones can go where humans and dogs cannot. Learn more about the SAR course at DART drones.
  • sUAS Industrial Inspectors- These inspectors use drones to check the condition of infrastructure, including bridges, wind turbines, and cell towers, minimizing the need for risky human involvement. Aerial Inspections are usually broken into two types of training: Aerial Inspections and Infrastructure Inspections
  • Drone Agricultural Specialists- Drones help in crop monitoring, irrigation management, and pest control, making the agricultural specialist role crucial for the modern farming ecosystem. UAVs can be equipped with different data collection sensors, such as RGB, multispectral (MS), hyperspectral or thermal cameras, or Lidar. Understanding how to gather this data can be a daunting task, but the DARTdrones Mapping and Modeling course helps our students gain the needed experience to gain the most out of their drones.
  • Drone Delivery Coordinators- These individuals manage the logistical aspects of drone-based delivery services, a field that is rapidly expanding as companies like Amazon push the envelope on e-commerce.
  • Drones in Construction and Mining- In the construction and mining sectors, drones are becoming increasingly vital, offering efficiency, safety, and precision.

Training and Expertise

The drone industry, rich with opportunity, requires a diverse range of training and expertise to capitalize on its potential. Aspiring and novice drone pilots often face a barrier to entry into the higher lucrative jobs because of a lack of advanced drone training. DARTdrones is an industry leader in training drone professionals to be workforce-ready.

  • sUAS Certification- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires commercial drone pilots to obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate, which involves passing the Part 107 knowledge test. This test assesses one’s understanding of airspace classifications, weather patterns, drone regulations, and operational procedures. DARTdrones offers both online and in-person 107 test prep courses
  • Advanced Technical Drone Training- Operating sophisticated drone systems requires technical training, often available through vocational schools, community colleges, or specialized online courses that cover drone mechanics, software, and troubleshooting.
  • Data Analysis- For jobs like aerial surveying, proficiency in data analysis and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software is crucial for transforming raw aerial data into actionable insights. DARTdrones offers in-person and virtual drone mapping courses.
  • Film and Photography-  Drone cinematographers need piloting skills and a keen eye for composition, lighting, and motion, often acquired through film schools or workshops. DART drones was one of the first training providers to offer an exclusive film and photography drone course.
  • Emergency Services Training- Search and rescue coordinators require knowledge of emergency response protocols and may benefit from a first aid or crisis management background. DARTdrones has trained 100s of first responders in drone search and rescue as well as Disaster Response.
  • Agricultural Knowledge- Specialists in the agricultural drone sector must understand crop science and farm management to use drone-generated data best. Utilizing DroneDeploy, the DARTdrones Aerial Mapping and Modeling course will give you the knowledge you need to get started in the agricultural drone sector.

The drone industry is not just reshaping careers but creating an entirely new professional ecosystem. With the number of drone-related job postings spiking by over 200% from 2021 to 2023, the sector demands an adaptable, certified, and specialized workforce. The sky is the limit for those willing to soar with the opportunities presented by the current drone industry. DARTdrones is here to help you no matter where you find yourself in your professional drone pilot journey.

HOUSTON, TEXAS – Texans Can Academy chooses DARTdrones to introduce drones into their classrooms as a goal to help underprivileged students stay engaged in school through their innovative DARTdrones CTE Drone Training Program. This is a first-of-its-kind drone program for Texans Can Academy

Partnering with DARTdrones and incorporating drone technology into the Texans Can Academy After-school Centers on Education (ACE) program is positively impacting the lives of students.  The hands-on drone training and outstanding curriculum is proving to be an effective way to help keep our students engaged in school and to see the possibilities of using drones as a career,” said Ken Reynolds, Texans Can Academies/Project Director.

Texans Can Academy teachers learn hands-on drone flying skills.

DARTdrones trained eleven teachers during a hands-on two-day in-person training event called Train the Trainers. During this training, an experienced DARTdrones instructor helped the teachers become comfortable and confident in flying drones and in taking time to help the teachers understand the most challenging areas in the Part 107 test. This is the mandatory FAA exam required to fly a drone for compensation or hire. The test covers many of the same aspects that manned pilots must know. After taking and passing the exam, applicants become licensed sUAS pilots with the FAA.

The DARTdrones CTE Drone Training Program is a turnkey solution for students pursuing a pathway in the drone industry. For any school or organization wanting to incorporate drone technology into the classroom, the DARTdrones program is fully customizable for nearly any class size or fits any timeframe offered. In addition, the course comprises both guided in-person instruction for educators and self-paced online courses, quizzes, activities, and tests for each student.  It offers everything a school, college, or workforce development instructor needs to teach their own drone classes.

“We felt that DARTdrones was the perfect partner to create a drone workforce development program. Over the past 10 years, we have trained over 20,000 students from dozens of industries from the nation’s largest drone programs. We understand the level of professionalism and skill that Fortune 500 companies are looking for in their drone pilots. We are distilling that information into a custom career pathway for high school age students,” says Abby Carroll, CEO and founder of DARTdrones.

DARTdrones would like to officially recognize and congratulate Elizabeth Witte on receiving the 2022 Wings For Val Foundation Drone Training Scholarship.

The Wings for Val Foundation honors the legacy of Navy LT Valerie Cappelaere Delaney who was an EA-6B Prowler jet pilot. Every year, multiple scholarships are awarded to women pursuing careers in aviation. Announced at the 2022 Women in Aviation Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee, this year’s scholarship recipient is 17-year-old, Elizabeth Witte. Elizabeth lives in Indio, California. Her interest in aviation began at the young age of 14 after a discovery flight. Her mentors from the aviation and aerospace industry encouraged Elizabeth to begin her journey towards a fulfilling career in aeronautics.

After graduating high school at 16, she decided to begin training to become a corporate pilot. Elizabeth enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide in the B.S. in Aeronautics program. During a flight session to obtain her private pilot license on December 4, 2020, Elizabeth endured a plane crash. Miraculously surviving the accident with critical injuries, Elizabeth has continued her education pursuing a B.S. in Engineering during her second year of college while still in recovery.

“This scholarship offers me the opportunity to keep flying from the ground. I love every aspect of aviation and this path in drone training can open new doorways in the aviation industry. This Part 107 certification will allow me to contribute to the aviation industry in a new way. Though I may not pilot aircraft in the air at this time, I can pilot them from the ground!”

This is the 5th year that DARTdrones has participated in the Wings for Val Foundation scholarship program, Founder and CEO Abby Speicher says, “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to continuously contribute to the future of these aspiring aviation professionals. As a female entrepreneur and business owner in the aviation industry, I hope to continue to see women pursuing careers in aviation.”

Board of Directors member, Caroline Desroches, states “The Wings for Val Foundation (W4V) scholarship program is extremely important to me as Val’s sister and board member of the foundation. These scholarships allow Val’s incredible legacy as a Navy pilot who made the ultimate sacrifice to be carried forward to current and future generations of women. The W4V Drone Training & Photography Scholarship given in conjunction with DARTdrones means a lot to me and our foundation. The recipients of this award have been able to take advantage of the cutting-edge training offered by DARTdrones and become FAA licensed remote pilots. Since we began offering this scholarship in 2018, there have been five young women who have received this scholarship and become licensed remote pilots. We couldn’t make this happen without our partnership with DARTdrones.”
